Family Tax Benefits
In Germany, you receive monthly **Kindergeld** (child benefit). When you file your taxes, the Finanzamt performs a 'Günstigerprüfung' (favorability test) to see if the **Kinderfreibetrag** (child tax allowance) would save you more money. If the tax allowance is better, the Kindergeld you already received is deducted from the benefit.
The Favorability Test
LSI keywords include 'Familienkasse,' 'Anlage Kind,' and 'Steuerersparnis.' For US expats, Kindergeld is generally not taxable in the US, but it must be factored into your total German tax calculation when claiming Foreign Tax Credits.
