Kirchensteuer Explained
In Germany, if you are registered as a member of a church (Catholic or Protestant), you pay an additional 8% or 9% of your **income tax** as church tax. This is often a surprise for US expats who find their tax bill significantly higher than expected. The tax is deductible as a special expense (Sonderausgaben) on your German return.
Leaving the Church
You must formally exit via the 'Kirchenaustritt' at the local Standesamt. LSI keywords include 'Religionsgemeinschaft,' 'Lohnsteuer,' and 'Finanzamt.' Formula: $$Church\\ Tax = Income\\ Tax \times 0.09$$. For US expats, this tax can be included in your Foreign Tax Credit calculation on Form 1116.
